WINEMAKING NOTES
2013 was an excellent vintage in the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara. The season was defined by historically low rainfall, budbreak, and sustained periods of warm to hot weather. Our vines were active throughout the season, and the grapes had excellent physiological and sugar ripeness with a nicely balanced acidic profile. Perfect conditions and a warm start to fall made it an early, fast and compressed harvest. This fruit is fermented in our cold room in one new 600 Liter Taransaud Demi-Muid Barrel and Stainless steel. We assemble and then age it for eight months in the Demi-Muid barrel and one new Quintessence barrel. It has a touch of malolactic fermentation and is reminiscent of the high mineral content soil Bordeaux whites that we’ve all come to recognize and love. Happy Canyon’s mineral soil produces a lean package that with proper fermentation and aging evolves into this creamy, complex yet powerful white wine. The wine was bottled in June of 2014 and released in Spring of 2015.
TASTING NOTES
The finished wine exhibits floral aromas with a hint of brioche toast, honeysuckle, and citrus fruits. Pear and apple with nice wood tones and creaminess on the mid-palate gives way to a hint of vanilla. It delivers a very rich mouth feel with a good acid backbone. Smoothly balances energy and weight and finishes with excellent clarity and mineral-driven persistence.
